13 thoughts on “With These Words I Can Sell You Anything: 4/1 reading

  1. As someone who is gullible when it comes to buying things, I am always looking for these weasel words. If it’s skin care I’m looking for that new, “fast acting” product that will clear my skin quickly. In reality, most things are not fast acting and things take time to work. After reading this presentation and the reading, I now know to be on the lookout for weasel words. Identifying these key advertising phrases can help to deduce how well the product will actually work. Altogether I believe this was a good reading and presentation, that will help me in the future with my spending habits.

    1. Ya I agree, I am gullible when buying things too and that by identifying these words we can see what the seller is actually saying. Which will show us whether or not the product is what we really want or not.

  2. If I had a nickel for every time I scrubbed the life out of my face with some new facial cleanser that claimed it would clear my skin faster than ever, I certainly wouldn’t be working at a restaurant that pays minimum wage. I caught on to these ad schemes long ago, and nowadays (despite the little amount of TV I watch) I view ads as humorous. Personally, if I’m going to invest in a product, I conduct extensive research and look to opinions that I trust from friends and popular critiques. Hopefully this presentation opens the eyes of many people who buy unnecessary and unreliable things, masked by these “weasel words”. A wonderful job, John!

  3. The first thing that came to mind after I read the reading was all of the pyramid schemes I see on my Instagram page. Whenever I’m shopping, especially online, I always really try to be mindful of how I spend my money and I always try and read reviews. However, I have definitely been tricked by these weasel words too many times, no matter how careful I am!! Honestly, marketing people scare me because they know so many little tricks to get into our over-trusting minds and get our money. Techniques such as weasel words are why it is so important to buy products that you genuinely know will work well and do what they are supposed to do. Hopefully this presentation and reading can help me be a more conscious shopper. Great job, John!!

  4. Great PowerPoint John!! I agree with what you mentioned, because as a consumer I have found myself falling for these tricks in the past. I try my best to avoid them now, but I’m always left wondering if the product isn’t using weasel words and it actually is “fast acting”. I try to do as much research as possible before buying a product, but every once in a while I still am tricked by these weasel words. This PowerPoint has made me aware of what to look out for and what these words mean and are masking.

  5. Weasel words get the best of almost everyone! Although I don’t use it too often, Facebook is full of these! I actually almost bought a Nintendo Switch for half of the price of retail due to weasel words telling me how much I would save. After doing my research, I knew I shouldn’t, but many don’t realize how scammers use these hooking words and “low prices” to scam you. I’m going to take these words into more consideration while I shop online. Thanks, John!

  6. Initially, I thought the title of your presentation was referencing words that were extremely persuasive and comely. After going through the reading and your slides, I realize that was not at all what it was about. It was more about the false idea that the advertisement gives. Each word they use is like a white lie. It is not exactly a lie that the product will not work, but it is not saying that it is in the best condition either. Your presentation was great and to the point. Well done.

  8. John, you had a really good PowerPoint. I learned a lot from it and what to look for from advertisements. It gives a better understanding of what advertisers are telling you, and what there targeted goal is. It reveals advertisers techniques in getting consumers to purchase products and or deals. I know now what words and phrases to analyze in advertisements to understand their main purposes. I have to believe this is an affective marketing strategy because these are common phrases that I’ve heard before from salesmen and advertisements. Really great post, I learned a lot.

  9. John, that was a great presentation. To start, I want to say that you did very well with going far and elaborating through your presentation. I like that your power point had many slides and that you covered all of your reading. You slides were very well organized and I have to say I think your power point is one of my favorites. I agree that advertisements do have catchy phrases or certain words that help persuade you to purchase certain items. Like Michael said if I would not have noticed these Weasel words I may have been like some average people that buy everything that catches my eye. I think that you did really good with this power point. Good job!

  10. Yeah, very interesting article. It was fascinating to here how advertising companies use the subjective meanings behind words to effectively lie to consumers. Looking back on most ads I see, I can definitely understand what you and the article mean. Many common examples of these weasel words come to mind. Cool stuff. Nice Job
