As we are thinking about the style and craft of our composition blog assignment (due Friday 3/20) to go a place you’ve never been and write about your experience there, watch Nicki Minaj perform on the Tonight Show! Listen to her composition and think about those tools for craft that we discussed way back when(listed bellow for you). Try employing some in your own blog assignment after you read the Tyner Visual Literacy article. Detailed assignment description below, after you watch the video!
Definition of Craft/Style: How the author describes his/her ideas, events, objects, etc. is critical for the craft of writing. To analyze a piece, one must notice the ways that the author uses words: i.e. word choice, sentence structure, figurative language, sentence arrangement, mood, imagery, etc. When analyzing craft/style, look at a piece of writing from the overall structure of the text to the small details and word choices.
Word Choice: Is the author’s word choice formal, informal, or a combination? Stretch yourself here! Vocabulary: Is the vocabulary simple, complex, or a combination? Sound Devices: Is there a pattern to the language? Alliteration, assonance, consonance, rhythm, etc.? Dialect: Is the writing written in dialect (from where?) or not? Dialogue: Is there lots of dialogue or a little? None at all? Sentence structure and focus: Are the sentences simple, compound, complex, or a combination? Does the author digress or go off on tangents, or tell the story in a focused way? Paragraphing/Chapter Structure: Short? Long? Author uses of chapters, or not? Figurative Language: Is there figurative language? Or not? If there is, what are the examples? Imagery/Sensory Details: Does the writing contain sensory words or detailed imagery? Or not? Format: Does anything stand out within the format (italics, bolding of words, abnormal use of punctuation)?Plot: Is the plot organized chronologically? In flashback? A combination? Is it a mystery story that starts with a crime? Is it realistic or dreamlike? Pace of the plot: Is the plot slow and suspenseful? Fast and action filled? Combination or medium? Point of View: Is it told in first person? Third person? Limited or omniscient? Other? Tone: What is the author’s tone (attitude) towards the topic? Why? Mood: What is the overall mood (emotional feeling) of the piece? Why? Motif: What are the reoccurring motifs? Relationships? Nature? Psychology? Crime? Conflict? Survival? Choices? Something else? Themes: What is the theme (motif and symbolism leading to a message) of the piece? Genre: What is the genre of the piece? Why is this important? Is this an allusion or allegory?

I am excited to see what you all come up with! We will workshop your descriptive writing in the next Announcement on Wednesday, so come up with 2-3 sentences to share in the comments section of Wednesday’s Announcement. Also write what visual literary methods (cited from the article) you think you are utilizing and why.
Stay healthy!
CM
Remember, as you are writing and commenting under the Announcement the places you’ve been, don’t just write “yada, yada, yada” I don’t know these places. Give me a bit of a preview to what you’ve, hopefully, been working on! OR a couple of sentences about the place!

I went to Jake’Rocks Bike trail. It is a mountain biking trail near the Kinzua damn. There was lots of great scenery and the trails were in beautiful shape. There are over 30 miles of trails. They are located in the Allegheny National Forest.

I went on a four wheeler ride with a bunch of my friends on some new trails we have never been on before. We went on over a 4 hour ride, and stopped and had a picnic half way through. The trails are behind my grandparents house in Pittsfield Pa. They own hundreds of acres of land. Some crazy stuff happened on my adventure, as you will read in my blog #4 post!

Over this past weekend, I went to a farm in Canadohta lake. Although it probably doesn’t seem that interesting this farm is like well known around that area. Mainly for one reason, this is not just any farm. There is buffalo and there is even a zebra. I didn’t get a good look at it due to the weather because the conditions weren’t good enough for it to be out but there was a spot you could see into where it stays in the winter and or when it is cold outside. This was actually a very fun experience and I enjoyed it a lot.

Over the weekend I went to The Rockland (Woodhill) Tunnel located in Venango County. The original 4 mile Woodhill loop was transformed into a 2,868 foot tunnel. This tunnel made it much safer and faster to travel by train. Today it is a local bike trial and walking path. This weekend I also went to Freedom Falls which was located right down the road from the Rockland Tunnel. This was a unique smaller waterfall but still made it worth the hour and ten minute drive.

I wasn’t able to venture far, but this last week I started a new job! As many think of Justice, they think of neons or pastels, the colors nearly blinding you from just measly passing by the store. The back room of the Lakewood 1248 location? Honestly, not much different than your average break room- minus the surprisingly super-comfortable leather spinny chair tucked into a desk against the wall, courtesy of my boss, Ashley. Everything in this store is pretty articulate, but the people and the procedures are really what is different than my normal environment.

I have a boring life, so like a few of our fellow class mates, I was not able to go far. The place I traveled to that I have never been-you may not have heard of it- was on the east side of Amish country, named sugar grove. I went hiking in foreign woods with my dog and found a slate creek, which is pretty much just a creek made completely of a flattened rock. It was gorgeous and removed me from city life and infected people. #staysafe

So, an unfortunate and frankly concerning pandemic has stolen my initial idea for a trip. Not being able to visit the Corning Glass Museum had left me doleful, thus I did what any normal human being would do. I logged onto my gaming PC and started playing Wizard101. A game that was once assimilated into my daily schedule has found its way back, and I have discovered a whole new world in the RPG that I’ve never been to before! The land of Wysteria, one of many realms in the Spiral. Wysteria houses advanced magic, arduous enemies, and….talking pigs?

As the world is in a current global pandemic, the choices for visiting a new place became limited. Although, living in the forests of Pennsylvania came at an advantage during these trying times. I journeyed throughout the Kinzua area; the dam, Jakes Rocks, and Kinzua beach. These places are all secluded from society and tourists can only get to a few by hiking into the wilderness on trails. The Kinzua area is about a 20 minutes drive from Warren, but it’s well worth it.

Luckily I was able to escape my home for a short hike at the Hatch Run Conservatory before my parents forced me to stay home and be in quarantine. I went to the conservatory with my friend and we walked along a river and down a pretty little trail with beautiful trees. There is a small pond and a pavilion at Hatch Run and it was very refreshing to get some fresh air and embrace the things we do have at our disposal during this unusual time.

Anyways, I’ll figure something out.

Just recently, I went to the Conewango Valley Country Club. I went there for a job interview, and plan on working there this summer. It is a private club with a respectable golf course, and a quality dining hall for its members. It is a beautiful area and was a great experience.

Coronavirus has stolen my original idea of going to a little restaurant in Jamestown, called Johny’s. I’d heard of it through some close friends and gathered that it was a place to reminisce on old memories and make new ones, specifically with a banana milkshake in one hand. I’ve since been quarantined. However, I do remember the first time I went to the Appalachian Mountains. The drive there was gorgeous, I stayed in a motel by a lake and the view of the mountains was absolutely stunning. Although not my favorite adventure, it’s definitely one for the books and not one I will forget any time soon.
