The entirety of this reading was about how science fiction movies/stories always have the same set up for their themes. They all have a set of phases on how the story plays out that are strikingly similar. This made me think more throughly about science fiction films I have watched. I noticed that some things were common, but I did not notice the severity of it in all of the films I have watched. This makes me wonder, are all science fiction stories the same, or is there one out there that veers off the path of normalization?
First of all, I would like to point out that this presentation was done very well. I personally believe each slide touched base on a cardinal topic from the reading. I agree with the interpretations, including the idea that fantasy is formed to shield those who are incapable of coping with the tribulations of reality. The thought of fantasy existing almost entirely for creating an atmosphere of disaster to cater to those who wish for an escape or outlet is mind-opening in itself. Despite its unconventional response to realistic dangers, I feel as though it is a benefit to society to have fantastical outlets for creative development and mental stimulating purposes. Awesome job!
Hello,
I most certainly agree with what you said. fantasy is a great outlet for people to use to escape or enter into a different atmosphere even if its only for an hour and a half. Without these outlets, I feel that society wouldn’t be the same: there wouldn’t be the same sense of creativity, there wouldn’t be the same view on disasters both big and same, there wouldn’t be a haze of danger hanging over us even if we choose to see it or not.
The presentation represented here was wonderfully put together and touched basis with many subjects presented in the reading. As a personal and professional worrier, this subject tends to be a major component of my time is spent trying to manipulate a disaster into a fantasy. This essentially turns any anxiety into something that is bearable and I want to think about, rather than the horror movie that life tends to be. Many actually prefer to stray away from horror movies, as I do, just so that they cannot feel the disaster and unnecessary feelings brought upon while simply watching a film. Though, a counter claim, some actually thoroughly enjoy the thrill and unsettling feeling. Although, fantasy isn’t necessarily a bad thing-it can be an outlet to those who are unable to express themselves, just by being able to live in their own fantasy.
Ashley,
I think you did a very good job putting into words the aspects of fantasy within our lives– the way people use fantasy to escape and live a desired life. I am definitely like you and don’t like horror films. Now that’s not to see I haven’t watched them. I definitely agree, as well, most people enjoy horror films for the feelings it gives them and the rushes of adrenaline.
Hunter,
First of all I would like to say that you did very good with your presentation. You worked well with the topic and were able to give a thorough understanding with each slide. You summarized the reading extremely well with your eight slides. Without seeing any example you were able to creat, what I feel, Chernice was looking for. I feel that I was able to gain some knowledge from your slides even after doing the reading assignment myself. The imagination of disaster I feel is something that can been seen as a healthy thing. Even though disaster is something that is being imagined it can always happen. It helps us to be grateful that we do not have to go through whatever disaster we are imagining. It gives us a different prospective on how things really could be. I do think that it could become unhealthy if dwelled upon to much and can possible lead to depression. For example if the disaster being imagined is your own death. It can cause you to be in a sad state of mind due to dwelling / imagining on how and when you will die.
Overall Hunter I think that you did very good on your presentation. I am happy you were able to find a way to transport your slides onto the blog post. You presentation was easy to see and very well organized. I liked that you broke up the information onto eight slides to make it more organized. Wonderful job!
Good job with the presentation. The slides allowed me to further understand the topic even after reading it. I feel that imagining disasters is a heathy thing. My mindset is if you can imagine something so horrible, then if it were ever to occur you’ve already mentally prepared for it. Imagining disaster also allows us to be thankful for what we have. We see how terrible something could be and become thankful that that isn’t the current issue. Lastly I liked how your presentation was broken up nicely, so that there wasn’t an overwhelming amount of information in each slide.
Hello Hanna,
Just like you I also believe that imagining disaster is a healthy thing. I see nothing wrong with preparedness in life. There defiantly comes a point in life when preparedness can take an unhealthy turn, as we see what is going on in the world right now it might not be such a bad thing.
Hi Hunter!! Great job on your presentation, it was very neat and you did a great job of focusing on the main points from the reading which allowed me to understand everything more clearly. The most interesting part for me was the five phases. I always knew that a lot of these kinds of movies followed patterns, but after reading that section, I was frankly upset at how generic and similar all the movies I have seen really are. I don’t particularly love science fiction movies, but they do have a time and place I suppose. Whenever I am watching a science fiction movie, I personally don’t watch it for the disaster or the distraction from reality, I watch it probably just because there is nothing better to watch. However, I can understand why someone might want to watch something to escape from their regular life, but is there something so wrong about that? Again, great job, Hunter!!
Hey, Hunter! First off, I think you did a great job with your presentation! I believe that you did a very nice job of organizing your slides neatly. It definitely helped further explain what I had just read. I feel like I was able to take away even more knowledge from your PowerPoint, even after doing the reading assignment. I found the take on science fiction to be interesting. I liked your slide contrasting fantasy and horror. I really believe that people tend to get so caught up in films pertaining to fantasy because they want to stray away from their own problems. I also believe these people seek the comfort and eutopia that horror movies cannot deliver them with. I know I am definitely one of these people, and I tend to get more satisfaction from fantasy movies, instead of horror. Anyways, great job on the presentation!
Hunter, great job with your post. It helped me further understand the reading. The way that you dissected the reading was really good with how you organized it into your slides. I learned a lot from your reading and you helped further my understanding of it all. I found it interesting to read about the five phases. I was unaware that movies followed these types of patterns that these movies followed. I for one am not a fan of science fiction and never noticed this but I guess if it helps people escape the reality of what is going on, maybe I should watch one. Great post!
Hunter, you did a really good job on your PowerPoint. It provided a more in depth look that the reading didn’t provide. You made it easier to follow and easier to understand. I do agree that I’m sure a bunch of people tune into science fiction as an escape from reality. However, I’m sure a lot of people (like myself) just watch for the entertainment aspect. I don’t think there needs to be a deeper meaning but I can understand how some people would want there to be one. Great post, it was very well composed.
hey hunter!! I really enjoyed your power point about “ the imagination of disaster.” It gave a very in depth view of this reading. i knew movies were quite similar but didn’t realize HOW similar they actually are. Again, I think you did a really good job and wish i could’ve seen ur in person!!
Nice work Hunter!
