  1. Hey Mike! Your presentation was very eye catching. Even from the start, the bright colors caught my attention. This topic was one I had not even have thought of, while reading other blog posts about social media and stuff I had though about them. But not once did I see a Arby’s or Starbucks sign and think America was dull because of chain companies. Your take on it was very well and amazingly put. Everywhere you go there will be hometown diners or shops. There is much variety among us that some do not see. Great job mike!

    1. Thank you so much! I tried to implement an eye-catching theme for my presentation, such as chains try to present eye-catching product, if you catch my drift. I would agree, I hardly recognized that groups of people discouraged chains purely for lack of variety. I think these people are just being picky. There’s many chains across the globe and many sights to see in the U.S. While I do enjoy indulging in a roast beef sandwich (or a few) from Arby’s, I still happily attend local businesses.

  2. Your presentation was great, Mikey! I completely agree with all of your points you made. If seeing chain restaurants makes people feel more comfortable, why change that? There is so much more to a town than the stores and companies that are there. I found it very interesting that in the reading the author quoted something about the United States being monotonous and boring. Yes, a lot of places have the same chains, but they also have so much more to offer. Another point the author made was that every deli and diner is just about the same from place to place. I’m not really sure what she expects owners to do when they already struggle to own a small business. Do you think chain restaurants and stores make America monotonous?

    1. Thank you so much for the compliments! I genuinely agreed with the author. I find it a bit far-fetched to deem a country boring due to the accessibility of style and cuisine. I think that may actually be what makes America so unique. So many cultures and outlets blending shows how inclusive each and every business is. I certainly do not find America dull. Exclusivity does not equal satisfaction.

  3. You’re powerpoint was great!! I feel as though it really helped to capture what the reading was trying to portray. I can connect what you describe in the reading bc when I travel I sometimes like to try new things and other times I’m happy to have something familiar. I agree that chains do not make America boring, but it gives people a sense of familiarity. These chains give people the option to choose whether they want something different, like a local diner, or familiar, like McDonalds. I feel as though this makes traveling a bit easier for some people. By having both options available it makes travel easier as people have a choice.

    1. I’ll tell you what- I have a love/hate relationship with chain stores. I believe that they are lesser compared to small businesses, but that’s due to protocol from their corporate management, however this does not change my mind completely. Going from Sugar Grove to Pittsburgh is going to be such a jump for me and I know its going to take a lot for me to get used to, so in this case, I very much agree with the comfort levels of the chain businesses and their essential presence in everyday society. I feel as though a lot of people view their comfort upon what they have always known, though even then, you had to start somewhere. However, both chains and small businesses give equal opportunities to try something new. For example, I’ve yet to have Chipotle, but I can tell you all about The Labyrinth Press Co. in Jamestown. I suppose the majority is a preference to the consumer and I don’t think even free food could change someone’s set mind. This PowerPoint was very correlating to the reading and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

      1. I do not deny the fact that small businesses have the potential to create a astoundingly more comfortable environment then say a McDonald’s or Chipotle. You know as well as I that New Beginnings has been the place to eat for me since I was first introduced. However, it took time for me to find comfort in those intimate businesses. Chains allowed me to ease myself into my environment, such as it will for when we each go to college. This does not mean i am any less excited to discover new local stops in the near future. Thank you so much for the insight and the compliments! ❤

  4. Heyo!! This reading has been, by far, the most understandable. It is so easy to drift into normality that we don’t realize we are in a new town, but in the same store. I found it interesting to read that this feeling of normal ness is considered boring to some people. I know from my own experience that when I was driving home from North Carolina I was relieved there was a McDonald’s to stop at to get some food, rather than weird stores with weird names. My favorite part of your PowerPoint was the relatableness(yes, that’s not a word butttt…). I like how you were able to compare your own life experiences to create a better understanding. My only question is, why do people care so much the familiarity is boring? Shouldn’t they be happy they always have a piece of their home land at arms reach? Overall, you had Ana amazing PowerPoint that was able to stay in track on exactly what our reading was about.

  5. Michael, I loved your PowerPoint. It was relate able and I agree with all your points. I enjoyed reading about how it related to your own personal experiences. I completely agree that chain stores do not give a place it’s character. To say a country is monotonous based on the fact that many of the places in it have the same chain stores is misleading. Although Warren Pa and Boston Ma both have McDonald’s, does not mean that you are getting the same experience at each place. Sure, you can shop in similar shops and get similar food, does not mean that the places are the same. Furthermore, some people do not like change and by keeping the chain stores similar gives people a sense of familiarity. Thus, bringing people comfort. Chain stores give people a sense of choice which adds to their freedom. I felt as if this PowerPoint was constructed very well and it dissected the reading perfectly. Therefore, I do not believe that chain stores make the United States monotonous.

  6. I absolutely loved your presentation. It was so bright and colorful and just stood out in a different way to me. I love how you took your reading assignment and made it your own throughout your slides. You did very well with connecting the main points in the reading and putting them in your slides. It is crazy how far chain restaurants can go across the United States. Seeing these chain stores and restaurants definitely does bring comfort for a mover. But, like you were saying I don’t think that chain stores and restaurants define what a town really is. I used to live in the state of Washington. This state had a lot of chain restaurants that I love to eat at. But this state is more than just chain stores and restaurants there is beautiful nature throughout the state. Going back there yes I do enjoy the old chain restaurants that we do not have here but the state is not defined by these things. Having chain restaurants definitely brings comfort when traveling and moving but I do enjoy sitting down at the local restaurants and eating because I feel they bring the town together. One points that stood out to me was when you said that chain stores and restaurants increase the availability of jobs. With working at Walmart in my local town I definitely see this present. Walmart is constantly hiring new people and giving them new opportunities. Without these chain stores and restaurants there definitely would not be as many jobs available. this presentation was very well put together. You worked really good with the reading assigned. great job! 🙂

  7. I really enjoyed reading your PowerPoint. You did a great job discussing chain stores and showing the difference between places. A store in the city is way different than one of a rural community like ours. Chain stores plan to target where the most people go so it only makes sense to have more in the cities. That is where all of the customers tend to be. It is all about sales and that’s why these bigger companies are in the city or well populated communities. It does suck that some companies do not reach out all the way to us. However, big brand companies are spread all across America in both urban and rural communities. They can expand their market because they’re in no fear of going out of business. For example, if one McDonald’s store is not making a profit, that company just shuts down that store. They can take their business elsewhere and aren’t reliant on that particular store. Chains do not make America boring, they just give the general public the same options they would have in other parts of the country. Great post!
