Hi! I like dogs, funky socks, and loud music. I would choose hot weather over snow any day and I love thunderstorms. I also hate sweet things like candy but I’m always down for those airhead sour strips.

  1. Is google making us stupid? To an extent, yes. A lot of people, including myself, resort to this browser for answers and what a lot people don’t realize is that they’re listening to other people and their opinion of what is right. However, as mentioned, web browsers are home to common internet artifacts and way to influence our brain and actually improve our knowledge in certain subjects. I have noticed that I take more time into research now, more than I ever did, just because your source says so much about a subject. This presentation was very well put together and I think that the subject is very relevant, especially with what is going on today. Thanks, Megan!

  2. Great post Megan! I really enjoyed reading your PowerPoint and you brought up some really good points. I think google is a useful tool and it makes it easier to obtain information. Maybe google requires less thinking, but it all depends on how you use it. You can choose to use it wisely or misuse it. If you need a single source of information quickly, that can be provided for you. Also if you need a more in depth view of your topic , that’s also available. On the one hand there’s pieces of information that you may never have known without google. On the other, the answers are almost always there and you can use it to think less. I don’t think it’s making us smarter or dumber, it’s just changing the way we consume information. Everyone skims some articles. The point of skimming is just to get an understanding of the content without having to waste your time. If the information turns out to be useful, that’s when you spend your time and read it in depth to get a full understanding of it. If it turns out not to be useful for you, then you didn’t waste any extra time. Also just because some things in an article are useful to you, that doesn’t mean that the entire article can apply to what you need. Overall, google is probably making you stupid in some aspects, but enhances others even if you don’t see it. I enjoyed your PowerPoint. Awesome post.

  3. I do believe,in a way, that google can make us stupid. Instead of spending time looking through our books and notes, we click a few buttons and the answer is given to us. This creates a lower level of subject absorption. It has been proven several times that the more you read and look over something, the more likely you are to remember it; however, certain active learners do not skim basic research provided online. They are able to take in all available information and even though they put in less effort, they are able to take away what they learned to apply themselves. I can admit to some of the tell tale signs of an avid googler. I fidget all the time when I am bored. I also have an extremely short attention span especiallyyyyyyyy when it comes to stupid people who can not use valid information to proves themselves right in an argument but continue to get mad when they have nothing to base their anger off of or justify themselves with. Honestly, I loved your presentation. The topic was extremely accurate to our generation right now. My question is, even though people say it makes us dumber when we google things, doesn’t that actually make us smarter for being able to find a loophole in the information that we could use to benefit us?

  4. Wonderful presentation Megan. It was very well put together. I can tell that you spent some time creating this power point. Your topic was one of the ones I definitely found interesting. Google has always been a resource that we have used for research with school projects of even simple questions we may have. But, is google making us stupid? I personally feel that google makes finding the right sources to work off of for research papers much easier so it is creating people to become much lazier. I don’t really feel like it is making us stupid though. By reading the articles on google we are obtaining new information that we did not know before. But, google can be abused by some users. Some people plagiarize work and those people I feel are becoming stupid with google. Another example why google is making us lazy rather than stupid is because of how much faster it is that taking the time to read through books and notes. With just a few clicks you have your answering but with books it could take 30 min to a couple hours. With google I do think that I definitely read less than the people who didn’t have google. I feel that the people who researched through books are definitely more hard working than someone who only used google. Great power point Megan. I enjoyed reading the questions at the end to kind of give me a recap and some take away questions. Wonderful job!!!

  5. I loved your presentation! It is a subject that really hits home, especially for our generation. However, I disagree with the statement that highly accessible information results in “stupider” people. Such as when people started using matches, lighters, and such to start fires instead of starting it themselves with hard labor, it did not make them any less capable of survival. We use an outdated educational system that is often viewed as redundant and futile by our generation. To not use an remarkable invention for our advantage would, in fact, be the stupid decision. Just because I don’t sit down with a book everyday, that should not imply a lower tier of intelligence or ability to retain information. Nicely done!

    1. I really love the analogy you used, and the wording of this comment. I totally agree that its not a bad thing that we have found more efficient ways to find our information. Thank you for the input 🙂

  6. Megan, your presentation was very well done. I think this topic is very thought-provoking and will probably be argued over forever. I personally do not think Google makes us dumber. It definitely makes us more reliant and perhaps a little lazy. However, times change and we cannot be blamed for our dependency on the internet. Why should we waste our time reading an entire article when we probably won’t remember the majority of it? I find skimming a good tool for when you’re doing research and you’re short on time. We simply can’t be expected to research the way people researched years ago, things change every day and we have so much more access to online tools. My question for you is what your opinion on all of this is.

    1. To be honest I think google has made me so stupid. The amount of stupid things I google a day is sad. One day I googled “are you born with bangs?” Another day I googled “can you have no butt crack?” I don’t think google is making society stupid however. The amount of newfound knowledge you can possess just by googling something and reading an article is crazy. However, we have become very dependent on google. It has also made us lazy. We no longer have to really try or think too hard about anything as we can get the answer in so many seconds. I skim readings all the time. I find what is important and use that information. There are instances when you just don’t have time to read everything. Side note I love the color scheme and set up of the PowerPoint. It really kept my attention.

      1. Thank you! I really get lost in presentations sometimes if it’s just a boring layout, so I try to pick something that keeps my attention as the writer in hoped that the readers will enjoy it as well :). I definitely agree that google has made us lazy, but I also think it’s super useful. I used to have adults tell me I had to use a real dictionary because it was unrealistic to expect the answers to always be handed to me, and I never understood that. We’re growing up in a time when that’s exactly what’s happening! I can google anything and have the answer immediately in most cases. I think it’s very useful and if the future of education and learning is this fast paced and time efficient, why waste your time reading every page of every book relation to the subject you’re learning? We should embrace the quick paced nature of learning that technology has provided us with.

    2. My personal opinion is that it’s unrealistic to expect students in today’s society to sit and read every in depth article on the subject they’re researching. I do notice myself skimming articles and I have noticed my attention span slowly depleting but I think it’s more because it is easier and faster to get answers now. I don’t call it making us lazy so much as evolving to absorb information in a better way. Being able to accept the stuff you learn and spit it back out in a way that is less time consuming but still gets it across is better. Why waste time with the tiny details in a long article when the reader is really only going to notice the big points anyway? Thank you for your input, it’s greatly appreciated 🙂

  7. Megan this was a great PowerPoint that really outlined what the reading was explaining. I also agree that google maybe be making us “stupid” but I use that lightly. Although google gives us the ability to read less, that doesn’t mean that it hinders our knowledge any. People do tend to skim readings, but I think this is because they are so used to typing in a question and getting a straight answer. I feel as though as long as a person can find the information they need while skimming, the job of the text was still done effectively. To answer your questions, yes I do find myself skimming readings, and to be honest it saves me a lot of time. I also change between texts frequently, and i believe this allows me to get more information to better support what I have already learned. I don’t think google is making us stupid, in most cases, but it definitely makes us more efficient.

    1. Yeah!! That’s how I see it too! I’m glad I’m not the only one who does these things but sees it as more efficient in the long run.

  8. Hey megan! Nice powerpoint, it was set up really nice and looked like you put a lot of effort into it! I found this reading so interesting because of how relatable it is to a large majority of our generation. We are all probably guilty of just looking something up online when we don’t know it even though we could find it a better way sometimes. I feel like our problem is that we are so used to using things like google now that we just do that to save time and also our effort, even if that isn’t the best way to find some information. I admit to being guilty of this!! I definitely do it because it’s “easy” and saves me time and it’s less work for me. It’s pretty lazy of me honestly. I do think that google and other similar sources are making us less intelligent than prior to relying on it. I do see myself skimming readings, and not wanting to read a ‘huge long article’ ( even though it’s only 2 pages long lol) I do agree with this reading and relate to it. Hopefully i make changes after reading this and learning about it in depth more but that probably will not happen lol:/

    1. I get that, and it’s weird because as much as I see the point this reading was making, I personally think Google and technology hasn’t so much made us stupid or lazy but rather exposed us to a new way of learning. At least that’s how I try to think of it, maybe I’m just in denial. i totally relate to the “long” articles only being 2 pages long though, I definitely have lost my ability to focus on anything I’m not deeply interested in.

  9. Great presentation Megan! I don’t necessarily think that I’m going to take in information differently than I used to, but maybe more often I am noticing that I am doing the things that were discussed in the presentation. Personally, when I am doing research, if it is something I truly care about, then I will read thoroughly through many different articles and information to attain the data I need. However, if it is something I do not really care about, skimming the articles is definitely something I find myself doing a lot. I do not think that reading has gotten harder or that focusing on singular tasks are the problems in some cases. Most of the time, yes our phones are our greatest distraction. But when the phones are taken out of the picture, we can’t focus because most of the time the material is just simply boring and doesn’t seem like it is even trying to keep us attracted to it. Sometimes writers put in way too much information than needed and it makes us just completely lose interest in the reading.

    1. I completely agree! I would argue that viewing multiple sources before you find a decent one is sometimes better than wasting your time trying to find good reliable points in every single article you find. Also a lot of full articles you find, you can tell where they just stuffed information in, rather than staying on point, where as with shorter blog posts and such, it’s easier to stay on track and not stray. Thanks for your input 🙂

  10. Meghan i loved your presentation. I believe that to an extent, yes google is making stupid. We rely on it so heavily and we want answers instantly because of it. People used to have to go digging through books to get answers but now we have everything right at our finger tips and we can pull up what we want. Furthermore, this is taking people’s abilities of forming their own opinions away. We rely on what everyone else says and it could very easily be false. We need to check it with other sources. On the other hand, we are able to gather more knowledge, we just aren’t retaining it as well because it often requires much less research than before. Therefore, google can be seen as going both ways, making you smarter or dumber. Great Post!!
